Police now say deaths of woman, son weren’t accident

Kentucky State Police say a woman and her adult son whose bodies were pulled from the rubble of a house fire in Eastern Kentucky last week were murdered.

Police originally thought the blaze was accidental and that Bernice Elam, 81, and her son Nathan Lynn “Mikey” Elam, 54, died before they could escape.

Nathan Elam was physically disabled and was in a wheelchair.

However, evidence collected at the scene and autopsy findings show that foul play was involved, Trooper Ralph Lockard, a spokesman for the Morehead post, said Monday.

Lockard said no further information is being released.

Authorities found the bodies April 15 after being called to an early-morning blaze at the multistory wood-frame house on Ky. 191 in Cannel City, near the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway in southern Morgan County.

The house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived about 3:30 a.m., Lockard said.

One of the bodies was found in the kitchen and the other in a bedroom.

Lockard said police don’t have any suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call state police at (606) 784-4127.
