Orange County, Fla. — A state contract worker was arrested Monday on suspicion of leaving a 52-year-old disabled woman inside a locked car with the engine off and the windows rolled up for 45 minutes while she was inside an Orange County store, deputies said.

Lillie Newsome, 48, of Orlando was arrested on a felony charge of third-degree neglect of an elderly or disabled adult.

Newsome is a contract worker for the Agency for Persons with Disabilities. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office initially reported that Newsome was a contract worker for the Florida Department of Children and Families.

According to Orange County sheriff’s deputies, Newsome went into the store, located at 7224 W. Colonial Drive, at about noon Monday, leaving the woman inside the car.

A witness saw the woman, who appeared to be hot, sweaty and in distress, banging on a car window, deputies said. A deputy went to the store, sought the driver of the car and got the victim out of the vehicle by breaking a car window, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Newsome then showed up and said she was inside the store for a few minutes, deputies said. An investigation determined that the woman was inside the car for at least 45 minutes, deputies said.

Temperatures in Orlando on Monday reached the low-80s. The temperature inside the the car could have reached 93 degrees, an Orange County sheriff’s report said.

Newsome was being held on $1,000 bail at the Orange County Jail.
