Eastham – Whoever took a disabled man’s four-wheel scooter from its parking spot Thursday didn’t intend to steal it, police said Friday.

The 65-year-old stroke victim reported his scooter stolen sometime after 2 p.m. Thursday following a shopping trip on the Flex bus. The scooter had been parked in its usual place at the Brackett Road intersection of Route 6, where he picks up the bus, according to Emily Gould, a customer service representative from TD Banknorth on Brackett Road.

Friday afternoon, “unidentified subjects” arrived at the Eastham police station with the scooter and said they thought the vehicle had been abandoned, police said. No charges were filed but the incident remains under investigation, according to police.

The Eastham Natural Resources Department took the scooter to TD Banknorth, where it was returned to the man. Police said the scooter’s mirror was damaged.
