Sarasota — A Sarasota man was supposed to be taking care of a blind, disabled woman but left her without food, medicine and her checkbook during a crack cocaine binge, police say.

Dale E. Roberts was booked on exploitation and theft charges over the weekend, about a month after he vanished from his live-in girlfriend’s home — leaving her without blood pressure medicine, breakfast or her checkbook.

Investigators say Roberts drained Annie Ruth Washington’s bank account, and spent more than $600. Her account had about a dollar left in it when Washington realized her checks were missing.

When Roberts disappeared, Washington was hospitalized. She is 49, legally blind and uses a wheelchair. Roberts was allowed to live in her home on Brink Avenue for free, as long as he made sure she got fed and took her medicine, according to an arrest report.
